I have the terrible feeling that I have stolen this incredible piece of Japanese “pop” imitation of a French porcelain soup tureen. I bought it in an op-shop in Sutherland (South of Sydney) for the 5 dollars.
Most of you will find it outrageously ugly but it has this funny touch which reminds me of my parent’s place back in France. My mum has inherited so many wonderful pieces from my grand-mother such as an asparagus dish, a green and white gigantic soup tureen and colourful painted plates of all sorts.
If you are a where is Wally expert, you might be able to spot the Chinese tea set on the right, the zebra giant dish at the top (one of my parent’s wedding presents), an old painted plate from Brittany in the middle right and many other treasures.
These photos are pretty bad but they show very well this old house’s atmosphere. It is a real family house, full of kids laughter, good food and props to content for a whole year someone like Kara Rosenlund, amazing photographer, stylist and vignette queen.
These glass cabinets have always been a sort of mystery place for me since my early childhood. A sort of treasure chest.
See my three rascals helping mum blowing her candles. The “fruit bowl” had lion’s paws. The cake dish is ruffled and pretty much everything around is part of my personal story.
The old a familiar Chinese tea set which is rarely used. It is the sad fate of precious and pretty things.
It is this family atmosphere which I miss a lot that jumped in my face when I was casually browsing the dusty aisles of Vinnies last week-end in Sutherland. This fake pot looks absolutely stunning to me and will remind, with a little wink, my small Australian family of the old dining room back in Burgundy.
This asparagus dish used to fascinate me when I was a little girl. I wondered why the food was fake and if ever people would put real asparagus on the fake ones. I’ve never seen it used. It is sleeping there, with its pair of silver tongs.
I cannot wait to go back and create fantastic dishes to take all this old porcelain friends out of their cupboards.
