In my quest for the perfect organic wheat grain, I came across this store Naked Food in Newtown. It sells organic health food in bulk. Similar to Alfalfa House also in Newtown, it sells spices in large jars, flours, grains, legumes and many more goodies in large tubs. You can bring you own container or purchase a paper bag or even a plastic or glass container.
The choice is huge and if you are a heavy consumer of certain products, let’s say unbleached organic baker’s flour, you can call in advance and get a good price by purchasing a 5 kilo bag.
The service is very friendly and helpful. Meet Jennifer :)
You will find 2 sorts of vinegars: Oak aged balsamic and apple cider.
Tamari and maple syrup are available on tap.
In larger plastic containers, rice malt syrup, black strap molasses and eucalyptus honey all organic.
If you haven’t brought your bottle, just buy one :)
There is also a selection of nut butters freshly made from the machine in the store. There is a nut butter planning: each day of the week is a different nut proposed. You will find almond, cashew, macadamia, peanut, etc.
I love the spice display. It is gorgeous. You cannot see this well in the picture but there are actually 3 lines of those beautiful glass jars in total.
You will find chocolate, vanilla seeds, ground ginger, smoked and sweet paprika, cayenne pepper, chilli flakes, turmeric, cinnamon, etc.
Some less usual ground products such as Stevia leaf for a sweet touch.
The kids were pretty impressed by the price of vanilla powder.
There is a paper bag size for everyone and every need.
If you think of any sort of flour (amaranth, buckwheat, sorghum, etc) you will find it here. If you are a gluten free baker, this is paradise…
This time we took unbleached organic baker’s flour. It was pretty heavy and this is what we were after. It is a fantastic base for creating your own sour-dough starter.
I am into milling my own flour at the moment so I am constantly looking for good organic wheat which is not easy to find at all! This grain is expensive to my opinion (compared to already milled flour) but it is fantastic. The bread I make with it is wonderful, flavoursome, nutty…
You can find also Spelt and Rye grains or flours which I use in my bread too. They are wonderfully fragrant when baked.
Rye is wonderful when freshly ground and mixed with organic heavy flour and ground wheat (soon a recipe will show you how).
Alex is filling up his bag with organic rolled oats for his morning porridge.
These oats are pretty large and make the creamiest porridge.
These roasted wasabi peas are to die for. They are so addictive than a while ago, I nearly made myself sick, eating them while writing my weekly e-magazine for Tricotin.com.
Wendell makes a ham hock soup with this mix. I think I will steal his recipe soon and publish it here :) It is the ultimate winter dinner.
The day you come visit Naked Food, organise your planning to have some time. The choice is huge and you really feel like looking into each and every tub they have.
With these red lentils, I make a fantastic dahl in my Magimix Cook Expert. I transformed the Magimix Book recipe adding a lot of spices. It is very flavoursome.
There is a large choice of legumes, all sorts of lentils and dry beans.
We really appreciated the contact with Jennifer and her help. Good service is always a huge plus!
Alex was a great help too :)
We liked Naked Foods in Newtown a lot :) We will be back very soon.
