On the busy Enmore Street in Newtown (near Sydney), opposite the Enmore Theatre, there is a gem for serious foodies. It is called Alfalfa House and it is a food cooperative where you will find all possible grains, spices whole and ground, organic fruits, veggies and eggs, plus much much more.
The shelves are laden with amazing products, rare finds of excellent quality.
There is a large choice of nuts.
You will find the classics of course but also a lot of Australian endemic products such as Mountain pepper.
The idea is to keep packaging to its minimum. Clients are asked to bring their own container. It is a great idea. And if you have forgotten, don’t fret… you will be able to buy paper bags.
A lot of different organic products including oils.
Recycled egg boxes, ready for you to fill with fresh organic eggs.
Liquids are also sold in bulk: oils and vinegars. Bring your own bottle and fill it up.
There are all sorts of grains and legumes available in bulk. There is a large collection of quinoa for example.
Try their spinach, tomato or stevia powders to colour your sauces and risottos. It will also give them a lovely taste.
As you can see the choice is huge. Do not hesitate to ask for help. The staff is very helpful.
It is one of the rare places in Sydney where you will find whole grains such as wheat, barley, rye. It is fantastic if you want to make you own rolled cereals or mill your own flour. There is even an electric stone mill from Austria that you can use for free.
Note that freshly milled flour needs to be used quickly for the oils to remain fresh and to benefit from all the vitamins present in the grain which disappear in a matter of hours.
In an open refrigerated shelf, there is a small selection of fruits and veggies but always interesting: exotic fruits, Jerusalem artichokes, etc.
In large jars you will find energy “balls” and fruit & nuts snacks for small and big people.
You can buy fresh eggs there.
If you are fed up with industrial herbal teas, make your own :) There is a large choice of delicious dried flowers and leaves to choose from. You can get creative with your desserts as well…
Alfalfa house also sells its own nut or grain pastes such as tahini.
They sell a great selection of jams made with Australian native fruits and flowers such as: finger lime, rosella, lilli pilli, desert quandong and rainforest plum.
Explore their amazing shelves and try their spices.
DIY breakfast cereals dispensers. Alfalfa house is THE place to make the best home-made muesli and cereal mixes.
After this quick visit of an amazing store, it is important to explain what is the concept behind Alfalfa house. This is how they present themselves: “Alfalfa House is a not-for-profit cooperative that aims to provide, where possible, minimally packaged and minimally processed, affordable, wholesome, organic food to its members.”
You can shop as a client, as a member of the cooperative or as an active member. The more time you invest in it, the better prices you get.
In a deceptively small store, you will find an enormous range of organic and good quality products in bulky dispensers and jars because we can all make an effort that counts for our planet. This is more of a community project than a store but of course when you step in, you find the best products and some rare ingredients you’ve been looking for. It is a great project and actually a lovely shop which instantly makes you happy.
Have a look, push the door!
